A COLOURFUL MIX

How much individuality is appropriate when designing a block of flats? In Reutlingen’s ‘Blue Village’, the answer is: a good deal. A new urban district, comprising around 350 flats, has been built over the past few years on a site where logistics facilities used to stand. The Gesellschaft für Betreuung privater Bauherren (GfB), a company supporting prospective private homeowners, developed the project and it was carried out by building cooperatives with the GfB’s support. The GfB brings future residents together and takes on various tasks in its role as coordinator. These responsibilities include the organisation of financial and legal affairs, tendering and awarding contracts and supervising construction work. The three blocks on Sickenhäuserstrasse, which offer a total of 39 flats and include underground parking and which are part of the fourth construction phase, have also benefitted from GfB support. Flat size varies from approximately 45 to 116 square metres and ranges from one to four rooms, demonstrating that these four- to five-storey buildings can provide accommodation for a diverse group of people with different personal circumstances. The floor plans take this variety into consideration and most feature generous-sized balconies or terraces. Lifts provide access to all floors, and selected flats are wheelchair-accessible. In this way, the housing cooperative brings individual living requirements together within a common organisational framework. The exterior of the three buildings also earmarks them as a family unit by using ALUCOBOND® in a remarkably dynamic design to link their façades: elongated trapeziums and irregular polygons merge to form horizontal bands, creating vivid undulating interfaces. Sometimes the colour is Grey Metallic, sometimes a lighter Champagne Metallic. Only at the transition between floor levels does a clear, straight line emerge; the remaining upper and lower edges run diagonally – this angular geometry creates a gentle wave effect when viewed from a distance. In addition, the golden colour scheme boldly highlights entrances, windows and the perforated balustrades surrounding the cantilevered balconies. So, this is a unified façade, but one which thrives on variety – and it is ideal for a type of housing where many individuals join together to form a whole.
