SPACE BEYOND

Key factors in all successful learning and research are experimentation and the desire to discover something new. Ector Hoogstad Architects planned a new building for the Netherlands Institute for Space Research in Leiden with exactly this in mind. They had to tackle all kinds of technical issues: clean rooms planned and constructed to be vibration-free; rooms catering for ultra-modern laboratory equipment which is light, heat and movement-sensitive, and requires both special protective measures and a large amount of space. At the same time, however small, bright and attractive offices, workshops and meeting rooms were needed as well as public exhibition areas and lecture theatres. Instead of just using the same façade for the whole building, the architects stacked the different functions on top of each other and clearly revelled in this organisation process. They selected contrasting materials, intermixed folded projections and recesses, alternated opaque with transparent and coarse with glossy surfaces. A glass façade on the ground floor has opened the building up to the public, allowing observers outside to see the work going on in the clean rooms behind orange-coloured glass partitions. Above this, a band of sprayed rendering acts as a demarcation in the façade. Like a layer of low cloud, it defines the line between the public zone below and the staff-only area above: the different surfaces in glass, mirror glass, Smoke Silver ALUCOBOND® elements and folded white perforated sun protection clearly denote the three middle floors where the employees’ offices and workshops are located. At the very centre of these storeys a central courtyard, the heart of the building, allows light to penetrate deep into the office accommodation. Crowning the building is a real heavyweight structural element clad in dark ALUCOBOND® tray panels. Without this uppermost, windowless technical section, no research would be possible. As the technical level approaches the atrium, it fragments into an endless repetition of the atrium roof on the reflective ALUCOBOND® surface. Indeed, this is a pertinent reference to work carried out here: exploring the endless expanse far beyond our terrestrial space.
