Modern interpretation of viennese art nouveau

The Massachusetts College of Art and Design student residence is a modern interpretation of Viennese Art Nouveau. Gustav Klimt’s 1909 painting “The Tree of Life” inspired designers when planning the exteriorof the building. Students, faculty members as well as alumni participated in the design process.

In the words of B.K. Boley from ADD Inc. architectural office, “’The Tree of Life’ is present in almost every culture or art form in the world, it conveys change and optimism. The students wanted the building to read like  a painting soaring in the sky - expressive and powerful. They felt it ought to embody the College of Art.

The object was to include and represent the topic of sustainability in the building design. There is nothing more organic than a tree. By constructing this building, we have planted a thriving tree on the so-called Avenue of the Arts.” The architect comments on the work of Viennese artist Gustav Klimt saying, “His works embrace pointillism. Contrasting colours are juxtaposed and the overall effect is opulent in so many respects.”The tower’s vast façade surface is divided into rectangular shapes. A typical characteristic of Viennese Art Nouveau is breaking up large rigid surfaces. The whole complex has nonetheless a modern spin, since the characteristic flourishes and ornaments have been omitted. The material selection is modern, too. The ALUCOBOND® panels used for the façade cladding comprise seven shades and gloss levels ranging from 10% to 50%. Tamara Roy, also an architect at ADD Inc.says, “We began with darker colours at base level, lightening in tone as we moved upwards so that the building seems to disappear in the haze. The colour palette ranges from gold to rust and is reminiscent of tree bark. The green are as symbolize leaves. Finally, the base is bent - like a tree trunk, whose crown then extends outwards. The unevenness of the bark is recreated by using tray panels in different depths.”
