Reflections of learning

A school building which is as charmingly camouflaged as the new building in Ternat, Belgium is a rare sight. It might almost be playing hide and seek. The ALUCOBOND^® façade transforms the building into a mirror of its environment, reflecting the sky above and surrounding trees. This is a building which is neither assertive nor overpowering, and despite its gleaming skin, it is rather self-effacing. This creates a space for the pupils which feels less like an austere schoolhouse and more like a natural extension of their playground.
In 2023, De Bouwerij Architecten added an extension of five classrooms to the school and in so doing created a place which communicates great openness yet provides shelter and protection. The façade is clad with approximately 500 square metres of reflective panels, installed using an adhesive bonding system. The material’s technical application may be clear-cut, but its effect is poetic: The borders separating the building and nature are blurred, an interaction which opens up new perspectives for the children. Light variations and changing seasons appear on the surface like living images.

Modern architecture does not reject its surroundings in this case, it blends into them. It intensifies children's perceptions – offering a living space which supports growth and discovery. The resulting setting echoes the surroundings, the building merges with the environment, even extends it, and triggers the imagination and inspiration. The façade disappears, the mirror becomes a new backdrop, a stage which brings together nature and architecture, play and learning. A building which is virtually invisible – and yet owes its most powerful impact to this self-same fact.
