The lustre of alpine foothills

A house with a view over Lake Zurich is very desirable; a property with direct access to the lake even more so. However, an architect needs to have a few tricks up his or her sleeve if the dog-leg shaped plot of land is so long and narrow that the house has to be located in the second row and only offers glimpses of the lake. Indeed, that was the situation facing this exclusive new home: the best exposure to sunlight was to the southwest whereas the lake views were to the northeast. In order to make the most of the view and the sunlight, the architects had to open both sides of the residential building and select an appropriate orientation. They achieved this by designing an asymmetrical polygon with a section projecting out of the rectangular ground plan and stretching out towards the water at an angle on the lakeside façade. Taking advantage of the slightly sloping topography, they designed the first floor to lead out onto the higher level garden on the side facing the road and onto an elevated viewing terrace on the lake side. It seems as though the building just wants to peek around the corner, to catch a glimpse of the lake. In reality, from inside the house, there is a wide lake panorama in one direction and in the other, a view of Alpine foothills. Although the structure’s shape was actually born of necessity due to the location of the building site, the façade design has made a virtue of this fact by highlighting the angular shape of the building. Clad in AluBronze 01 ALUCOBOND® PANELOX® Zinc tray panels, the glossy reflections on the panels’ bi-layered silk-matt surface mean the house resembles a type of sedimentary rock streaked with delicate gleaming mineral veins. So, located in the glitz and glamour of Zurich and nearby foothills, the building might only be noticed by those who look particularly carefully, despite its unusual, sophisticated architecture.
