Warm red colours in San Francisco

The 12-story Olume residential complex in San Francisco opened in March 2016 offering 121 luxury rental units – including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments – as well as two levels of subterraneanparking. Arquitectonica was brought in to re-designthe façade of the building. “We were askedto re-think the exterior,” said architect IlonKeilson, who shared project managementduties with Leon Cheng at Arquitectonica.“This building is located on a prominentcorner (Mission and 10^th streets). Wewere asked to create a more vibrant landmark. The resulting façade design for the L-shaped building appears as an abstractseries of coloured metal cubes created from ALUCOBOND^® and installed at five variabledepths: From a thematic standpoint,we wanted to introduce dynamism throughdepth,” said Cheng. “We wanted to reflectdiversity in the neighbourhood and in residentialbuildings.”The varying façade depths “were accentuatedby the colour palette,” according to Cheng, who said the architects wanted toincorporate red in the building as one of San Francisco’s more prominent colours associatedwith both the city’s Golden GateBridge and its NFL 49ers professional footballteam.
