A meandering white concrete band unifies existing and new buildings. Its role is not merely functional as it provides design coherence and a sense of identity. msah m. schneider a. hillebrandt architektur’s design has succeeded in turning the premises of the episcopal secondary school in Warendorf into a sheltered area for all pupils. The sinuous band acts both as an organising, space defining structure and an architectural element. It forms the new, generously proportioned main entrance before turning into the roof of the new building with its 11 classrooms and encircles library and media library. It also borders the sports fields and, finally, moves on over the roof of the newly added sports hall. Detached from the essential functional rooms, the meander works as an independent design element which creates open spaces and brings a touch of calm to lively, busy children’s areas with dappled reflections of sunlight. The dark introverted impression of existing buildings is a direct contrast to the new building’s transparency. Large glazed areas and vistas open out from the school playground towards the road. The architecture achieves its educational goal by ensuring everyone can find a comfortable learning environment in one of many different settings, for instance, in the sizeable stairwell, which acts as access, learning and recreation space. Authentic, durable materials, such as smoked-oak parquet flooring, wool-felt pin boards for the acoustics and fitted furniture predominate in the classrooms. The interior cladding, made from light-coloured, large format panels is fitted flush and integrates the building’s technical installations and lighting. Top-hinged windows open outwards in the floor to ceiling glazing. The sun protection on the south-facing glass front makes an essential contribution to the appearance of the façade. A distinctive deep, louvered curtain in creamy-white aluminium made from ALUCOBOND® tray panels provides effective “low-tech” shade and has a decisive impact on the façade within its urban surroundings.
