Clear cut
An open, windswept expanse almost the size of three football pitches once divided the tall prefabricated buildings, blocks of technical buildings and long rows of houses from one another on the Poznan University of Medical Sciences campus. It was the largest of several undeveloped car parking areas dissecting the extensive campus and it resulted in a lack of contour and scale. No building lines were there to offer fixed points, no sightlines at eye-level and no designed outdoor spaces to frame the in-between territory. The architects at Rysy Architekten wanted to change this by building the “Collegium Pharmaceuticum?. To begin with, they persuaded the university to rethink the schedule of accommodation, to reduce the size of the buildings and to make better economical and sustainable use of the space instead. Rather than constructing high-rise blocks with six-storeys as initially planned, three pavilion-style buildings now offer ample space. There are two three-storey blocks flanking a building in the middle with just two floors. Connected at street level and via the basement, they provide a total area of 16,000 m² for teaching and research, administration and business. Structural engineering and functionality played a decisive role in creating the architecture and façade. The supporting structure comprises concrete pillars and slabs at the building edges and an inner core. This creates a flexible and spacious interior. Atria with glass roofs, internal courtyards and full length square windows maximise the amount of natural light entering the interior. A recessed ground floor behind rows of columns has created arcades and outdoor areas sheltered from the elements. Set back from the street in a staggered layout, the three pavilions are in a newly created garden which is accessible to the public. It has benches, numerous medicinal plants, shrubberies, bushes and trees.
The pavilions’ clear outlines and their ALUCOBOND® façades interact with the garden: the staggered arrangement of the buildings creates greater visual depth in the outdoor space and a line of vision which is emphasised by the horizontal lines of the ribbon windows and the accentuated floor slabs. The slanting ALUCOBOND® tray panels draw clear-cut edges and fleeting shadows. The interplay between nature and architecture changes in colour depending on the time of day and the season: sometimes the ALUCOBOND® terra Pyrite and RAL 1036 surfaces stand in contrast, sometimes they harmonise with the foliage and grasses, reflecting the sun in a complex range of warm golden hues. The façade’s clear geometry is the logical outcome of structural design and lighting. It acts as an aesthetic framework and contour for the organic diversity, the vibrant complex texture of the garden.
