Stadthalle Engen

Engen, a small town in the western region of Lake Constance, is characterised by pointed rust-coloured roofs and green hills. But now there is a new building; Engen’s Stadthalle is both out of the ordinary and understated. As a multi-purpose hall, it plays an important role in the town’s political, cultural and sporting life. It offers space for school sports and school catering, for concerts, seminars and town council meetings. The challenge the architects faced was how to emphasise the importance of such a significant building without upsetting the relatively homogeneous overall image of a city whose structure has evolved through history. What sort of highlight is suitable and what is the correct balance? The whole building is a “not only but also”, in terms of its use, but also in its design: the architects opted for a moderate height and a two-part structure, in order to reduce the mass of the building and to adapt it to its environment. The architects have echoed the typical division found in surrounding buildings but with a contemporary interpretation. The hall’s base, comprising entrance area and side rooms, is rectangular. Its façade in warm-yellow wood references the neighbouring yellow and pink plaster façades. The straight lines of the matt weathered timber cube are also typical of the rural architecture around Lake Constance and Alpine region. The roof of the multi-purpose hall arches over the base right down to ground level. It is clad in ALUCOBOND® spectra Cupral tray panels which, depending on how the light falls, shimmer in different shades of orange and emphasise the special character of the building. Two contrary but contemporary architectural approaches are combined in the base and roof: The wood-concrete architecture based on traditional, regional craftsmanship and the curved ALUCOBOND® façade, which was created in a high-tech production process. Software individually calculated the substructure and each façade element before they were cut and formed by CNC machines. Tradition and high-tech go hand in hand.
