Gateway to the city
At Warsaw West Station, train passengers in the Polish capital encounter a new interface in urban life. This is where architecture’s ability to transform the actions of waiting, arriving and departing into special experiences becomes perceptible. A futuristic network of pathways, bridges and different levels spreads out between the clear linearity of the glass, steel and concrete structures, bringing to mind a cathedral of transit.
Large-format ALUCOBOND® panels were selected to cover a surface of 43,000 square metres. Their appearance on the roof, tunnel and interior space is striking and creates a robust yet ephemeral lightness. In cool tones of silver and black alongside warm copper hues, architect Marcin Wolszczak of DWAA Architekci plays with contrasts: transparency meets solidity.
Viewed from the outside, the building looks like a geometric fragment from a future era. The roof, comprising rhythmically folded surfaces, stretches out over the tracks and the design echoes the movement of trains. In the interior, new perspectives open up all the time: long sightlines following the line of the platforms, dramatically staged stairways, light-filled passages which draw the eye towards the city.
Begun in 2022 and still under construction today, Warsaw West is an ongoing project– a living environment filled every day with people, sounds and stories. The station combines shelter and openness, function and experience. Getting on or off at this station in Aleja Jerozolimskie does not mean merely entering a transport hub, it also means discovering an architectural gateway to the city.
