Deceptively different

In past times Belém – Portuguese for Bethlehem – was the port where sailors embarked on voyages of exploration and took refuge from storms in the sheltered bays. Unlike the city centre – which suffered extensive damage in the 1755 earthquake, Lisbon’s most westerly district has well-preserved historic buildings dating from before 1800. The ‘Torre de Belém’ is a tower of special interest. It is a small defensive fortification at the mouth of the Tagus and it has guarded the riverbanks where the river flows into the sea since the 16th century. Built at the height of the Portuguese Manueline architectural period, this Late Gothic landmark features an impressive and elaborate stone façade; it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction. By contrast, the quiet residential neighbourhood of Restelo is set on a hill in the northern part of Belém. In line with the key principles of the garden city movement, it was built in the mid-20th century and is regarded as one of Lisbon’s most affluent neighbourhoods. This is where, next to the ‘Estádio do Restelo’ stadium, detached houses border the wide roads, embassies from seemingly every country line up next to each other and greenery in private gardens and public parks stretches up the hillside. Architecture aficionados will discover numerous Portuguese modernist buildings – some of which have wonderful views of the Tagus flowing past to the south. A private house on Rua Pêro da Covilhã also enjoys this spectacular view. Built in 2024, it echoes the form and dimensions of the structure which used to stand here. Designed by Olavo Dias from the architecture office Atelier Difusor de Arquitetura, this new building alternates between solid façade surfaces and generous glazed window openings; balconies set in front of the façade are supremely transparent with their glass balustrades. This transparency provides a subtle contrast with the solid sections, which at first glance – or perhaps even at second glance – resemble exposed concrete with perfectly executed shadow gaps. Only close up does it become apparent that this is an optical illusion: in fact, like the Atelier’s previous buildings, this façade is also clad in aluminium panels. The perceived “concrete” cladding is actually a skilfully created surface made of ALUCOBOND® in the DESIGN colour range ‘Concrete’. It is rather uncanny how the façade’s reflection in the pool gives it a metallic sheen– as though the mirrored image is gently hinting at what the original so masterfully conceals.
