Rubik's Cube

A house like a painting by Piet Mondrian. This cuboid detached house, designed by COFO architects, stands on the outskirts of the city of Dordrecht, in South Holland. Its façade is made up of different sized rectangular surfaces in a mix of materials and textures. It seems to be a random assortment of wood, rendering, glass, concrete and metal, like a Rubik's Cube which is waiting to be solved. Combinatorics are the name of the game. Using a light touch, the austere form is broken up by contrasting materials and the result is a lively overall composition which integrates into the landscape harmoniously.

But, not only has the façade been developed following this principle, the interiors are also made up of different sized rectangular forms. In order to take advantage of the permitted building volume, the first floor ceiling is 4.5 metres high, a height which creates a feeling of spaciousness and provides additional storage space. The glass-fronted library is even loftier and combines two floor levels. Bedroom niches set on a higher level and galleries subdivide the space into smaller segments and at the same time offer broad lines of sight through the house to the countryside.

One of the reasons for building this house was the dream of a life close to nature. The compact nature of the design deliberately leaves space for a generous sized garden and the large windows set at the corners blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior.

However, the owners have also integrated a small reminder of their city life: the “metal crown” above the library is a tribute to a Rotterdam underground entrance. It was made from ALUCOBOND® PLUS with a satin-matt brushed aluminium surface.
