Through the looking glass

How can you add a modern twist to a quaint old house without disturbing or possibly destroying its old-world charm? The architectural practice, Mart Barrass Architect hit on a solution to this unusual riddle with the help of ALUCOBOND® naturAL Reflect. The initial situation: a listed thatched cottage with whitewashed walls in the 19^th century English rural style. A building deeply rooted in its environment - surrounded by hedges, trees and neighbouring houses with little space for an extension. The owners’ brief was for bright, modern rooms; the preservation order called for the historic context to be protected.

Reconciling these very different requirements is no easy task. But a 19^th century children's book character Alice might just be able to help. She lived in a similar cottage, and discovered one day how to enter a hidden, parallel world through the looking glass. Mart Barrass Architect, on the other hand, uses mirrors as a means of concealing an extension. 150m² of ALUCOBOND® naturAL Reflect panels clad the pod’s façade. Thanks to this sleight of hand with mirrors, the extension is turned into an optical illusion. The pod’s contours are undetectable, and instead of reducing the size of the garden, it seems to increase it and reflect the lush green lawn and hedges. The seasons and the weather govern its appearance, so it always looks different. If you go through the dormer window in the old cottage’s thatched roof, you end up in this invisible house of mirrors. Alice would be thrilled. Built close to the main house, the contrast between the modern extension and the old structure is comprehensive. On one hand, a vaulted thatched roof and rustic cosiness, on the other, a sleek, minimalist aluminium-clad pod and bright, airy rooms. The kitchen wall in the extension appears to be free-standing, as part of the roof is made of glass. A glass enclosure also covers the hallway-like area connecting the two parts.

The project successfully demonstrates how two fundamentally diverse architectural styles can be combined to create a sense of harmony and balance. The architecture is at once light-handed and deceptive, it is captivating and lets you live in two parallel worlds at the same time.
