Daily life in white and gold

Montijo lies opposite Lisbon on the banks of the Tagus River, where vast mudflats appear at low tide along the shallow shoreline and where flamingos and other migratory birds rest on their long flights between Africa and northern Europe. This small town is situated on the edge of the “Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo” in the Tagus estuary, one of Europe’s most important wetland areas. The landscape is ecologically extremely sensitive yet urban development is encroaching. Fragile nature converges with urban fringes, tranquillity meets expansion, and bird migration overlaps with traffic. Montijo, tightly coupled with the urban fabric of the neighbouring city, is also under pressure from suburban development. The town also looks back on a long history as a trading centre between rural areas and the capital, a market for foodstuffs – particularly for meat and fish.

The “Mercado da Carne” was built in this location as a specialized commercial centre with retail spaces to serve every day needs rather than a large shopping centre. Residents, commuters, and local business customers enjoy the selection of fresh meat and sausages, prepared foods, and delicacies.

In line with the logic of providing an efficient supply of goods, the architects have created a building directly accessible from the car park and featuring a clearly structured façade with a large glass frontage on the ground floor. The horizontal opaque surface, clad with ALUCOBOND^® PLUS “605 Colorado Gold Metallic” aluminium composite tray panels, is a band wrapped around the building, whereas the vertical alignment is primarily defined using “360 urban Traffic White”. The result is an exterior which provides easy orientation for visitors, and a building which contributes to shaping the heterogeneous commercial environment.

The project displays a pragmatic approach: everyday architecture has been created in an environment where flamingos and logistics play equally significant roles. The façade design is not an autonomous gesture; it is a precise response to the building’s context, requirements and purposes.
