Disneyland is in a universe of its own. On opening its gates, an inwardly oriented world is revealed; a world lacking any connection to the real environment of the Parisian periphery. In the direct vicinity, another independent cosmos has been created,extremely functional and colourful too butless kitsch: the Marne-La-Vallée Hospital. Architect Brunet Saunier was free to design the ideal hospital as he was not bound by urban planning constraints. This facilitated flexibility and potential for expansion, optimal internal operational processes, short distances and separate routes for individual user groups, compact functional units, a high level of cost-effectiveness and a good energy balance. A three-floor concrete building providing 72 000 m² of space with 585beds for patients and a monolithic glassenvelope of up to 200 metres in length came into being. Even so, the building is neither isolated nor lacking context. The double glass façade with screen printing Son the outer panes and reflective grey inner panels, reflects the landscape, alteringthe building like a mirage throughout the day. The only clue suggesting the colourful cosmos in the interior is the colourful overhanging roof. The artificially lit corridors appear almost aseptic with glass and grey and white high-gloss surfaces, and a strictly angular design. But, numerous internal courtyards bring space, light and colour into the depths. ALUCOBOND® cladding panels in varying colours are used on the internal court façades. The colours do not only act as an effective orientation system in the building. The atmosphere in the courtyards and neighbouring areas is in continualflux as the iridescent ALUCOBOND®spectra surface alters depending on how the light falls. This means that even in this very cloistered hospital universe, patients and staff are in touch with the actual andexisting exterior world via daylight and weather, the time of day and the seasons.
