STILL LIFE AND LANDSCAPE

Appropriate does not necessarily mean conformist. When the architects at ad2 architekten started looking at the issues of cubature, size and colour, their initial concern was not so much the typical style of neighbouring buildings but primarily the residents’ lifestyle, habits and their relationship with the surrounding landscape. The building’s architectural space has been adapted to the occupant’s needs and encompasses both interior and exterior spaces. Seclusion and privacy are just as much part of the design as close-range or extensive visual connections to the exterior. The architects have designed a reinforced concrete building in Lower Austria with extensive panoramic glass frontage overlooking the garden and the entrance. They have placed a lightly pitched concrete gable roof above of this, extended the roof panels several meters beyond the line of the inner building, and then set them on outer concrete walls. This concrete envelope surrounds the house’s living areas and patio. Large cut-outs piercing through both the roof and the envelope direct views into and out of the house and ensure good natural lighting in the interior. This house with its pitched roof mutates into a crystal-like entity due to its varied angular roof slants, its sizeable, asymmetrical cut-outs and the apparent hiatus in the ridge of its roof. The architects have encased the whole building in ALUCOBOND® composite panels and have amplified the sharp-edged, crystalline effect by installing a slanting substructure on sections of the concrete walls. The glossy composite panels and reflective glass façade contrast with the bare concrete walls visible inside. During the day, the panels reflect the surrounding environment and the cloudy sky like a wet surface. And on wet days, the building really lives up to its name: “Purple Rain”.
