BILBAO IN METZ

In 1997, the Guggenheim Museum turned Bilbao into a cultural high point and a provincial city made its debut on the international scene. That was when people started to talk about the Bilbao effect, the structural change and economic and cultural boom triggered by spectacular star architects. The City of Metz hoped that its new museum building, an offshoot the Paris Pompidou Centre, would trigger that same Bilbao effect. The Japanese Pritzker award winner, Shigeru Ban and the French architect, Jean de Gastines have built a tent-like exhibition space, set on timber supports with a roof covered in an 8,000 m² membrane. In deconstructive manner, the architects separated supporting elements, roof and internal spaces and gave them their own distinctive materiality, form and struc-ture. They then reunified the volumes to create generous interior spaces. The roof’s curved timber beams criss-cross to form a grid with structural properties which make large span distances possible. The pattern of hexagons and triangles distributes the intersections between the timber beams, creating filigree nodes and a delicate structure. The roof structure is set on steel supports and covered with a translucent Teflon-coated glass fibre membrane. Three 90-metre oblong boxes are inserted into the exhibition space beneath and are clad in white ALUCOBOND®. They break through the roof and create a frame for panoramic views of Metz Cathedral. A light, organic and upbeat entity has been created by interweaving the different elements and shapes.
