REFUGE IN A RUGGED ENVIRONMENT

Harsh climatic and topographical conditions with wind, snow, landslides and rugged terrain require specifi c architectural forms, structures and concepts, especially when a refuge or place of safety is located in an unhospitable environment such as on Mount Kanin. From the mountain, high above the small town of Bovec, there are 360-degree views over Slovenia and Italy. The site where the shelter stands can only be accessed by climbing or by helicopter, so respecting natural resources, minimising impact on the environment and creating a secure shelter are essentials in such a remote location.
The refuge now provides a safe stop off point for hikers, climbers and cavers in a place where weather conditions are adverse, especially during the winter. Snow lies in this mountain area for more than six months per year and violent rainstorms and high winds can batter the site. The risks on Mount Kanin also include numerous caves, crevasses, and even intermittent seismic activity. Kanin Winter Cabin forms a compact wooden volume with accommodation for up to nine mountaineers. The refuge’s protective outer skin is made of ALUCOBOND® to withstand the extreme weather conditions in this exposed position. The structure is held in place by steel plates fi xed to concrete foundations and half of the volume cantilevers over the rock face, leaving the smallest possible footprint on the rock. Its narrow end is completely glazed to provide breathtaking panoramic views over the valley below.
