Gateway to the Taunus highlands

Sloping terrain offers the ideal opportunity to dispense with standard architectural conventions and instead embrace a site’s topography. Villa Königstein, by the Darmstadt architecture office, Gerhard.Architekten provides a superb example of how a house and slope can meld together. It is a futuristic building featuring an interplay of contrasts and creating unique interior and exterior spaces. Viewed from the roadside, the building has more in common with a sculpture than a house. A deeply recessed central structure intersects the dominant, windowless, matt-gold façade and splits the entire house into two sections. These low sheen ALUCOBOND® panels have been installed using the Roof-PIN system for mounting rear-ventilated façades, a system patented by Wittenauer GmbH. The company specialises in both roof and façade construction and was also responsible for installing the aluminium composite panels covering 520 m². Visually, the façade is clearly divided into sections, which emphasises the geometric building shape. The only opening on the upper floor of the roadside façade is particularly eye catching. This double window front creates a painting by framing the garden’s greenery and arouses the viewer’s curiosity about what is concealed behind the closed door. In a science fiction film, this would be a gateway to another world. Or perhaps a stranded spacecraft?

Everything changes when you enter the house. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the Taunus wooded highlands extending into the distance as if on a huge film screen. The next highlight awaits upstairs: an atrium with a view. Like the bridge of a ship, it links the two-parts of the house.
The brick façade at basement level – or ground floor on the garden side – contrasts with the rest of the house. The smooth façade juxtaposed with the brickwork means the futuristic building seems to be ensconced on top of a dais. Echoing the brickwork, curving paved pathways and semi-circular, brick flowerbeds create a successful transition into the exterior.

It is an extraordinary house with two faces. Exploiting the advantages offered by the setting, the architects at Gerhard. Architekten have created a dramatic composition contrasting the diametrically opposed poles of shelter and security with openness and vision. When it comes to living spaces, it is always a balancing act between the two extremes.
