Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a majorregional venue with a storied history, hadfallen into disrepair when SHoP architectswas brought in to reconceive the look andfeel of the structure. The design team saw anopportunity to retain the strong massing ofthe arena while at the same time transformingit. “This building had great bones,” saidJohn Cerone, associate principal and directorof virtual design and construction, SHoP Architects. “With its thick concrete piers, weknew it could hold much more. We decidedto clip a metal design element to the existingstructure. ” The wrapping consists of approximately 4,700 unique “fins” created with ALUCOBOND
®
PLUS naturAL Brushed.“ Each of the elements in this system variesslightly in profile and dimension to create asubtle flow that reflects the big skies. Eachof these fins has six folds. We knew thiswould be a complicated folding and routingprocess. We wanted clean lines and severalfields of interest to look at as you walk closerto the individual fins. The ALUCOBOND
®
material expresses flexibility. It is very easyto form into precise shapes”, he finally explains.
According to the fabricator Sobot: “ALUCOBOND
®
is the only material withwhich you can actually produce theseshapes. It would be impossible to makethese shapes with solid aluminium sheets; they can’t be folded in this fashion.”
