The architects Ten Hove built a holiday home in Oostkapelle in the Netherlands in a completely undogmatic way and with a pinch of humour. The rapidly changing North Sea weather was a decisive factor in the choice of materials and shape: a house was needed that would allow people to live outdoors and protect them from strong winds, sun and rain. In the colder months, it had to allow plenty of light and the warmth of the low sun into the house and also create a holiday feeling inside. This is how the architects came up with the shape: a green monopitch roof and a closed outer wall to the north. To the south, a glass façade under a long, protruding roof and above that a façade inclined towards the sun. For the construction, the architects chose an undogmatic hybrid, taking the best of each construction:
The closed, weather-protecting north and east sides are constructed from solid masonry, with delicate wooden supports and beams to the south and west for wide, open spaces that extend out onto the terrace. The roof is made of trapezoidal steel sheeting, which is inexpensive, quick to install and very stable. However, you can't see the hybrid in the building, because the external appearance of the building is a theme in itself: the architects tilt the outer wooden supports at right angles to the roof, emphasising the unfolding in the cubature, as if the roof of a camper had been unfolded for a holiday. They clad the closed and very different structural elements with ALUCOBOND® composite panels in Vintage Concrete, thus unifying the external appearance of the building. The concrete look gives the building more strength and traction and provides the second eye-catcher. A concrete building, effortlessly unfolded from matchstick-thin, inclined supports? The observer is amazed that something so small can create so much confusion.
