FOLDED FAÇADE
ALUCOBOND® tray panels are folded and their long, angular edges jut out in front of the building. The implementation required great precision and accuracy. At Thyssenkrupp Presta in Eschen, Liechtenstein, steering systems are built for the automotive industry. Their lightweight engineering, robustness and quality are of fundamental importance: the more precisely and perfectly the components fit together, the more accurate and safe the vehicle’s steering. Exactly the same level of precision was essential for the façade at the new company headquarters. Baumschlager Eberle Architekten planned a concrete structure with a rear-ventilated façade made of ALUCOBOND® tray panels. They folded these tray panels to produce three-dimensional frames around the window openings. Their edges protrude way beyond the building line due to the folding process and the length of the façade components. This has a knock-on effect: minor differences in the dimensions at one end can lead to large gaps at the other, and the depth of the façade requires stabilising systems for wind and deadweight loadings/can a create leverage effect and be a target for the wind. Extreme precision was, therefore, paramount in designing and installing a suitably solid and stable façade. The substructure consists of welded brackets and deep T-profiles. The tray panels also have added stiffeners and horizontal profiles compatible with clasp fastenings riveted on their long sides. On the façade itself, however, the components do not look so long, the edges appear less solid, and the joints between the panels are not apparent within the general view. Taking the mountains as their model, the architects copied a trompe l’oeil effect: all the folds and openings decrease and fragment the visual impact of the surface, and the multiple folded edges allow individual parts to be absorbed into the texture of the overall picture. Small details minimise the large structure’s bulk; the large structure absorbs the small features. And, thanks to the anodised look, the façade is immersed in permanently changing moods. It changes just like the neighbouring mountain slopes, depending on the colour of the light during the day and how it falls on the façade. So in a way, this ALUCOBOND® facade has prompted the architects to create a miniature folded mountain in the middle of an angular, alpine landscape.
