A VISION DIPPED IN GOLD

Skolkovo‘s mighty "Cloud-Irons" glisten temptingly in Moscow‘s woodland. The idea is to turn Skolkovo into the Russian answer to Silicon Valley in the near future, bringing together future-oriented technologies, international companies and an elite university, the Moscow School of Management. London architect David Adjaye‘s architecture for the school premises is reminiscent of the Russian constructivists and refers both to El Lissitzky‘s work and to Kazimir Malevich‘s pictures. The base building is a 150-metre diameter disc used for communicative and collective activities: lectures and seminar rooms, a large 650-seat conference hall, other smaller rooms, a library and a restaurant. Light floods into the entire interior through the glass façade and roof windows. Four oblong elements soar above, linked only by the core of the stairwells to the base. The graphic idea behind the upper building: lines emerging from the circle ascend in all directions. The suns rays are reflected by its metallic façade comprising ALUCOBOND® composite panels and make the structure gleam like a collage of polished precious metals. Once again, the abstract graphics are three-dimensional or at least appear to be so. The façade banners slant in a variety of directions and generate a dynamic zigzag pattern in well-toning hues. Two blocks of living accommodation gleam bluish-white, whereas the administrative building and the Well-Being Centre glow in gold-bronze. Depending on the weather, the play of colours vary, sometimes vivid and sometimes subtle – a façade in motion and constant change. The graduates of the elite school should achieve nothing less for Russia, as the Dean Wilfried Vanhonacker hopes: "Change is what it is all about." And a golden future.
