FAMILIAR FACE OF BRUSSELS

Sometimes displaying inner greatness and making yourself smaller than you really are is the whole point. For instance, if ten floors and a total floor area of 10,000 m² are supposed to fit into a mature urban environment or an old building with its decorated brick, arched windows and small towers finds itself opposite a building plot which is immense in comparison. A.D.E. architects have relied on ivision and variety to achieve the appropriate scale, both in terms of building use as well as façade design. They have replicated the surrounding urban proportions, created a ground floor retail area, stacked three floors of office accommodation on top of it, and provided flats for various target groups in the staggered levels above. The façade design is a crucial factor for the cityscape: the architects have used vertical projections and recesses, varied materials and alternated solid and transparent surfaces in order to divide up the length of the façade in the perpendicular. The result is a building subdivided into narrower structures which parallel the proportions, design diversity and window sizes in the old town: The architecture is, nonetheless, modern. Thanks to its diversity, the new volume looks less ubstantial and takes on more familiar proportions. Since time immemorial, corner buildings have been of particular importance for orientation and for the delineation of an area. The architects have taken this into account and have extended the edge of the building on the upper floors outwards a few metres, selecting Vintage Patina Copper Mat ALUCOBOND® composite panels for the cladding. This too is reminiscent of old Brussels with its towers, domes and statues weathered to turquoise-coloured metal over the years. But unlike genuine metal, these panels do not weather and become a familiar, unchanging face in the cityscape.
