Waves of recurrent movement and change

Travellers see a bus station as a gateway to a new city – a place for meeting new arrivals and seeing others off, this building become an important part of the city’s image. Everyone wants public buildings to be functional and modern, particularly in resorts, which see a large flow of tourists.

Designing the new Palanga bus station involved solving the major issue concerning the location of the building. Historically, the station was situated in the city centre and in a very convenient location for pedestrians. However, the constant noise of traffic and airpollution during the season was troublesome and caused the people living or enjoying their holiday in that part of the city discomfort. So transferring the station to a new location further from the city centre, was an astute and logical move. The new station building welcomes the guests coming to Palanga on the old Klaipèdos highroad. The station premises and shopping centre are two rectangular tightly connected volumes. The waiting room is connected to the shopping centre which takes up the majority of the building.
The main façade of the shopping centre is decorated with “waves” and clad with ALUCOBOND^® spectra Galaxy Blue. LED lighting focused on the waves illuminates them, changing colours at night and reinforcing the play of colours within the material itself. The “pulsing” lights in volumes of simple shapes create a psychological effect appropriate for a bus station, communicating constant movement and changes.
