From Helsinki to Siena

A densely built, diverse residential area now stands in the western part of the Finnish capital where the freight port’s railyards, storage areas and large-scale infrastructure were located until 2008. Project Ambra (or Amber Project), a distinctive building due to its colour scheme and sculptural effect, has made a positive impact within the development since 2024. ONE Architects’ concept designed a residential building to be a striking landmark in the new Jätkäsaari district. Thousands of people already live on this peninsula and approximately 17,000 residents are expected in the long-term. However, the radical transformation of the harbour area and its repurposing does not mean an inevitable and complete rupture with the site’s origins. In the Ambra Project’s case, for instance, the architecture references the bygone logistics operations and bustling maritime activities. In particular, the colour scheme selected for the metal façades, the single, coherent material choice and the volume’s stepped form offer scope for such interpretations. On the one hand, the colour palette – a spectrum ranging from copper and orange to rusty red-brown – can be interpreted as a indistinct visual reference to the exteriors of shipping containers. ALUCOBOND^® A2 façade elements in a warm “709 Siena Copper Metallic” hue were selected for this purpose. On the other hand, the design’s horizontal terracing organizes the building into clearly discernible layers, creating a “stacking logic” reminiscent of towers of storage containers. While the port area used to be defined by standardized units stacked both horizontally and vertically; now Ambra has adopted this same principle for the future by creating successful, comfortable living quarters with individual outdoor spaces. This means there is an exciting interface between a conscious decision to align the design with the context and architecture shaped by its cultural context. In one sense, Ambra creates identity as an autonomous building within the fabric of this new urban quarter; in another, it echoes its industrial past – not a direct reference, but an abstract continuation.
