The common think tank

The Centre for Applied Aeronautical Research (Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung(ZAL)) acts as an interface between academic & research institutions inthe aviation sector.

Working together in onespace and under one roof in the TechCenter, promotes cooperation between businesses and science in the aeronautical sector. The short communication paths facilitate theexchange of experience and expertise, andfoster information and knowledge exchange between partners as well as promoting cooperative ventures.

The complex reflects the ideas of technologyand transparency in its architecture. A brick façade was originally requested, but thearchitects selected a material which was more in tune with the function of the building and as means of creating a link to aerospace. The materials chosen were silver coloured ALUCOBOND^® and glass. The building design optimises the exchange of experience and knowledge transfer. The main entrance is located in the central part of the building.

Set behind it are the exhibition space, the auditorium and finally the canteen overlooking the canal. Above the main entrance are three storeys uncoupled from the main structure.The shape of the administrative wing is reminiscentof an aircraft fuselage. Both wings accommodate laboratories, workshops aswell as large production halls, where aircraftparts are examined for research and testing purposes. The halls are 30 metres wide and natural light flows in through the generous lyproportioned glass frontage. The laboratories within the halls are accessed via opencorridors, making the transfer from deskwork to hands-on work fast and easy.

In the words of Roland Gerhards, the CEO at the Centre for Applied Aeronautical Research, all the big names from industries, universities or research institutes in the aerospace industry are represented on the list of shareholders and will benefit from the new infrastructure for their new innovative, collaborative projects.
