Just think about Benidorm, how it has been scorned and insulted or commended and hyped. Opinions are equally divided about how mass tourism will operate in the 21^st century. Some say ecologically, because it is space-saving; others scoff at this idea since the urban aspect is lacking. In fact, these different viewpoints are not mutually exclusive. Benidorm’s image problem is essentially due to the stigmatising impact of its architecture: a monotonous line-up of concrete high-rise blocks. At the rear, windowless façades overlook areas strewn with litter. Spending longer than two weeks here in a sober state is more than most can bear, and the place is deserted in winter. This is where a hotel project comes into play. Not as tall as many of the neighbouring buildings, the Helios Hotel stands in the back row with its ground floor patio and pool. It is surrounded by streets, palm trees and tall hotels which gives the holiday feeling a very urban touch. Renovated and enhanced, the old beige cladding has been replaced by a glamourous golden ALUCOBOND® façade and all-glass balustrades which are transformed into burnished highlights by the sunlight. The facade elements emphasize the horizontal, framing the glazed balconies on each floor to form an entity. This results in a calm appearance and mitigates the impression of a mass of apartments in rows. The new glamour also appears much more sophisticated. The hotel now lies like a holiday cruise liner in a sea of concrete. Inside, the façade lets in more daylight and showcases the striking panorama of a compact cityscape. If it was not obvious before, now it is patently clear that better design is urgently needed for mass-tourism urban space. Sometimes all you need is a new façade, a golden façade, to let the sunlight in and show your guests your appreciation.
