OUT OF THIS WORLD

Chapelle International in the 18th arrondissement of Paris is currently one of the most pioneering urban developments as it offers solutions to a significant question. How we will be able to facilitate multiple and contrasting use of space within high density settings in the future? The innovative residential floor plan typologies designed by the architects, Jacques Moussafir and Nicolas Hugoo, have achieved an effective mixed-use development: Terraced townhouses have been melded with the lower floors at the base of two residential towers, and professional spaces coupled with duplex flats. These, in turn, are linked to the encircling loggias. The latter are connected to the balconies which also shape the townhouses’ outdoor space. The architects have created numerous vertical cross-references in their floor plan: without encroaching on the available shared space or casting shadows, they have closely interlocked public, semi-public and private spaces, as well as connecting working and living areas. The ensemble resembles two mountains with a craggy topography and a view which is out of this world. The façade features projections and recesses, slender balconies and wide platforms. The architects have emphasised the complex’s austere mountain-like appearance by using a combination of materials which resemble stone and timber. The materials, however, are actually steel, ALUCOBOND® naturAL Line or wood. The ALUCOBOND® tray panels on the parapets are folded, giving the façades a more pronounced geometry and the loggias more depth. This is the case on one tower; on the other, it is a different story. The architects draw attention to the cantilevered floor slabs, and by using aluminium panels to clad them on all sides of the building, they delineate the slabs’ horizontal orientation. Here and there in the loggia area, they have cut two-storey sections out of the structure, making the underside and corner of the floor slabs look even more massive and bold. They also transform the roofs of the townhouses into a folded landscape with perforated aluminium panels. Even people living at the foot of this mountain can enjoy seclusion and silence in the small atriums and inner courtyards. Paris is far away.
