Not of this world

Tomorrow’s society is shaped by the schools of today. That explains why the initiators of the vocational schools at the Uster Berufsschulzentrum have a very special concept of education. Education as diverse as society itself, it should teach interdisciplinary thinking, a sense of community and tolerant coexistence, and at the same time, promote each and every individual’s talents. Now, after many years spent convincing critics, Uster’s Berufsschulezentrum has brought together different school types and diverse training and study subjects in one building, a building boasting a Minergie-ECO standard and an elegant ALUCOBOND® façade. The school not only provides enough space for everyone involved in school life, it is also a visible public statement: It stands for respectful interaction with students, their diversity and their futures. It also endorses elegance and spaciousness despite, as is often the case in education, the tight budgets for building works. The new building’s floor plan is functional: classrooms are arranged on both sides of a corridor and there is a courtyard. This layout, the well-lit areas in the stairwells and the large format windows allow a great deal of natural light into the interior and create a sense of space. The really eye-catching façade comprises shiny futuristic looking elements and is reminiscent of a space station due to the Brilliant Metallic ALUCOBOND® panels folded into three-dimensional, angular forms. As many as six edges join in some places and, in addition to very careful detailed planning, high levels of accuracy were required for the installation. More than 1,500 façade panels, including the substructure, were calculated digitally, cut and milled by CNC. As a result, the square modules fit so snugly and naturally on the large ALUCOBOND® building envelope, measuring more than 11,000 m², that attention is drawn to the lively play of colours on the facade. Light and shadow glide across the surface, creating distinct geometries and, as the day rolls on, the colour and depth of boundaries waxes and wanes. Until the next day, when it becomes light again and the corridors are filled with the sounds of life and of the future once again. A daily cycle in its own very futuristic universe.
