SPACES FOR THOUGHT

While architects elsewhere were evoking the future with their daring, large-scale volumes, from 2000 onwards, architecture in Germany tended to become visibly more austere. In so doing, architectural development was running parallel to emotional debates about interpreting the past, and this meant social trends had an equivalent in architecture. The result: historical reconstructions in some places, and in others, reminiscences of classic Modernism, itself already part of history. Both options adhere to the same principle: to generate something intrinsic and authentic and create a sense of identity for a society which is in the process of change. The concepts of Modernism can be found in the Tubingen Cityvilla built by Steimle Architekten. The monolithic volume has been reduced to basic essentials: the positioning of the windowsto provide good natural lighting in the interior and to offer perfect views of the landscape. The façade, featuring panorama windows along with concrete and ALUCOBOND® elements, keeps material mix and projections to a minimum. Even the window frames, set flush with the façade, are only defined as a line. The whole building dematerialises to extend the space and to link
the exterior with the interior. Flat surfaces and unobtrusive colours create minimalistic architecture with generous interior spaces for thought. Ample room for reflecting on the past, on timelessness and on permanence, and on the issues focal to architecture in Germany over many years: sustainability and appropriateness. The outcome: few pioneering or utopic projects are being built; projects are detailed, well thoughtout, high-quality and understated instead.
