BEHIND THE FAÇADE

When it comes to major cities in Germany, Düsseldorf tends to fly under the radar. Yet this tolerant and varied city is strong in economic terms, located in a future-oriented region where the population is increasing and, thanks to its airport, able to offer excellent international links. A new office quarter has been built precisely here, at the airport, and the Smart Office by SOP Architekten is set right in the middle. The Smart Office has a lot in common with Düsseldorf itself: at first glance, it looks business-like, elegant, urbane and sizeable in its dark ALUCOBOND® façade in terra Lava Nera, architecturally in keeping with the characteristic post-war modernism in the state capital. The façade on the five-storey building is in a strict grid format with identical windows forming long rows and a huge entrance portal on the side facing the road. The tailor made ALUCOBOND® tray panels are invisibly riveted and their surfaces and joints follow the exact lines of the reinforced concrete building’s supporting structure and layout grid. The modernists used the very same architectural device to link curtain walls with the structure. Bands of ALUCOBOND® framing the windows bring more light into the building and give the façade a more three-dimensional appearance. The first glance is followed by a second one: if you change your vantage point, walk around the building or through the mighty entrance portal under a glass connecting bridge, you arrive in one of the courtyards. This is where the inherent delicacy and diversity of the building’s structure become apparent. The building which presents a powerful and austere exterior, is divided into two h-shaped buildings with wings of different widths. This ensures good lighting in the more recessed parts of the property and a welcoming environment in the sheltered courtyard areas. Added to this, the structure of the building means interior space is flexible and available for very different office layouts, both small and large. In this respect, the building is an ideal match for Düsseldorf: concealed behind the elegant, business-like ALUCOBOND® façade is an unexpectedly diverse and flexible range of spaces for different purposes. Both the exterior and interior make the Smart Office resilient, sustainable and fit for the future.
