Like a riverboat, the Kauno Dokas office building is situated on the banks of the Neris, a river which flows into the Memel only a few metres downstream. The ‘steamer’ is one of many measures taken to safeguard the future of the Lithuanian city of Kaunas. The old town and riverside landscapes may be truly beautiful but not enough to stop people leaving Kaunas and relocating predominately in Western Europe. Over the years, the city has been implementing renewal programmes and new building projects for many well-known companies, and gradually they are setting up in Kaunas. The new building draws attention to both the river currents and to the currents of change which the city is experiencing. Breaking with architectural tradition, the architects emphasize the symbolism of renewal. The dark glazed façade of the oblong block with its curved ends contrasts with the city’s red and yellow brickwork and rendered façades. The building, a steel-concrete frame construction is mounted on stilts. At high water, it really seems to float on the river like a ship. Different building heights and sinuous projecting roofs cut through the stark building volume like waves. Carving deep into the building interior, they indicate its three entrances and stairways. On the inside, they are clad with ALUCOBOND® legno elements in wood décor. They emphasize the maritime character of the building and stand out against the dark, urban-looking glass façade. Oxidised copper on the exterior references the city’s church roofs. Wide concrete walkways lead from the access road to the three entrances. The building also sets standards ecologically: it is cooled with water from the river and also uses geothermal energy for heating. This makes it the first commercial building in Lithuania to achieve energy standard A+. In addition, the owners had the public shore area redesigned to include a playground, benches, footpaths and a connection to the cycle path network. The green riverbanks and water meadows along both rivers unify the whole city of Kaunas and make it a pleasant place to live. This is indeed the right location for a future-oriented highlight.
