BLOODRED AND SPARKLING WHITE

Knowledge is always only one fleeting moment in a dynamic ongoing process. No sooner is one complex issue resolved than it sparks new questions. Johann Schöner was one of the people in the early modern period who campaigned for enlightenment, for a new world view and against the superstitions exploited by the Church. He was a mathematician, cartographer and converted priest from the Franconian area in what is now Bavaria. In the city of his birth, Karlstadt, a grammar school is named after him. This school is committed to Schöner’s goals of scientific enlightenment and the well-informed, responsible society this learning creates. The school has received several awards: in some cases for its democratic school organisation, in others for its support for high-achievers in the natural sciences. The school’s development in both these areas has been consistent and vigorous over the years and the number of pupils enrolling has grown substantially. As a result, the amount of space and the technical facilities at the existing school were no longer adequate. The management responded by combining a general overhaul of the school with the addition of an extension: a new building with science laboratories and art rooms. Architects at Baurconsult designed a slender oblong volume with a slightly curved façade, set back from the existing school building and enclosing the new playground. As they wanted the purpose of the laboratory building to be clearly identifiable, they clad the façade in endless bands of sparkling White Silver ALUCOBOND® panels to represent the dynamism which characterises research. The edges of the building are rounded, enhancing the impression made by the bands, on the one hand, and optimising the S/V ratio (relationship between external surface area and volume) and the building's energy consumption on the other. The windows, the walls beneath them and also the projecting roof at the entrance are adapted to the looped configuration of the bands. Slender C-profiles, running between the pearl coloured bands, link them and divide the building horizontally. These joints are fine lines in blood red which end in the equally dark red cladding at the building's entrance. An unmistakable, cavernous blood-red entrance set in the white façade links the interior to the exterior. Not merely symbolically but also literally. The colour palette representing organic, inorganic and sterile matter is reprised inside: blood-red floors, partition walls and doors; stone-grey exposed concrete walls and pure white ceilings and bannisters. By making use of associative colours combined with graphic design, this new building makes complexity look quite simple.
