Suburban density in blue

New solutions are required urgently not only for high density living but also for low density living. Around Melbourne, for example, settlement areas are expanding across more land every year. There are approximately 4.3 million Melburnians living on 9,000 m², an area 10 times larger than Berlin and more sparsely populated. There is a huge suburban sprawl with ever growing commuter traffic jams. As the task of urban densification for housing and infrastructure is difficult given the small-scale private plots, the city has opted for a new district in the southwest of the city, right on the shore of Port Phillip Bay. Here in Wyndham Harbour, the aim is to get things right from the very start: higher density living is created by building blocks of flats, terraced houses and townhouses; the shops, cafés and a harbour with its promenade add urban chic. The plan is to provide ferry transport so that, in the future, residents can travel to the centre quickly without a car. The Marina Quay apartment building, with shops and restaurants on the ground floor, is located directly at the harbour. It is designed to attract residents who, in the past, preferred to live in their own house with double garage in the Australian suburbs. The design of the concrete building’s façade is very important: by repeating certain elements, it resembles a row of terraced houses. The ground floor units are individually highlighted in anthracite. The two balconies above are both framed in ALUCOBOND® Natural Copper tray panels, contrasting with the concrete grey of the façade and the sea blue of Melbourne Bay. The result is a sophisticated and contemporary appearance, one well-suited to the suburban environment. The side of the building overlooking the harbour has a more urban feel and the part facing the promenade is formed like the curved bow of a yacht. The continuous row of balconies along the water’s edge is also framed to create one entity. The colour palette changes: The concrete borders on the upper floors accentuate the panoramic front, the anthracite and glass façade is set back a little. The vertical balcony partition walls and sun protection elements clad in ALUCOBOND® tray panels are subtle highlights and unify the different sides of the building within a common context.
