A TRESURE TROVE IN GOLD

Building at the corner of a perimeter block development is always rather tricky. The geometry alone means that not much light penetrates into rooms on the internal corners, and fire safety measures often restrict light even more. In any case, there would be a certain lack of privacy in the rooms if windows were to be set close together on the internal corners. But no semi-public residential community can function without privacy. White Arkitekter and Asplunds Fastigheter succeeded, nonetheless, in creating a well-designed student residence to close a gap in a very narrow perimeter block in Örebro. They made a virtue of necessity, turning the problems presented by the floor plan into a key concept: as the south-facing side over the courtyard offered less privacy, this is where they located wide exterior walkways. In so doing, they greatly reduced the amount of space taken up by corridors inside the building and also created a space where occupants could meet. Because of its corner location, the architects were able to add two levels to the building without a conspicuous disparity in height. Although the building looks like a cube from the street, it is actually graduated downwards towards both neighbouring buildings. This transition with the existing buildings is coherent and space for several south-facing roof terraces is created - further places where the student community can gather. The floor plans are cleverly organised so that they can be cross-ventilated and different sizes (37m² to 80 m²) make them suitable for individuals and couples, for shared flats and for families. The façade is clad in spectra Desert Gold ALUCOBOND®. The resulting golden cube is, in turn, covered by smaller golden boxes which jut out. Both the warm-coloured ALUCOBOND® cladding and the protruding boxes, make reference to the bay windows and yellow render on the facades of the neighbouring buildings. In contrast to the existing buildings, however, this façade is glossy and, especially on the north side, reflects the weak winter light with a golden warmth into the street space. Despite being north facing, the panorama windows channel plenty of daylight into the interior and enliven the street space at night. What makes the building special is that it breaks with the usual visual perceptions and expectations of passers-by. Lead architect Fredrik Hedvall says, “Our goal is to create the most attractive student housing in Sweden.” Yes, who could imagine that this golden treasure trove is a home for 41 students?
