LOOKING FAR AHEAD

Coficab manufacturing building in Guarda,Portugal is a powerful tribute to the landscape.The architect, João Madalena, actually comesfrom this small town on the edge of the Serrade Estrela, in Portugal's mountainous interior.Although Guarda is well positioned in terms oflogistics, many companies have left the town inrecent years to relocate at the coast. All that remainsare a few long-established medium-sizedbusinesses and impressive, lonely highland terrainover 1000 metres in altitude. So, Madalenahas chosen to immortalise the landscape andCoficab's core business in the architecture:the company produces cables for the automotiveand logistics industries. The internal wireused in conventional cables is made of copper,which transmits electrical impulses optimallyand can convert them into movement. This isprecisely why the architect has opted for recurringslat-like elements aligned in vertical rows inthe first place, and also why the cladding is incopper-coloured ALUCOBOND® PLUS naturALCopper. Repetition on the sides of the buildinggives them a direction and generates motion.This is very apt for the new manufacturing buildinginvolved in technology development, electrification,networking and autonomous driving. Thearchitecture of the new-build is also influencedby the process of motion in the landscape. Mansard-like windows are set on the short sides ofthe building, two on one side; six on the other.These outlook points project over the edge ofthe roof like massive periscopes. These are eyecatching features and will turn not one but manyheads. The east-facing periscopes provide vistasof the vast landscape; those to the west surveythe distant hill where the old town of Guardais located. On the long side of the building overlookingthe road, the architect has lined up equidistantlyspaced slats clad in copper-colouredALUCOBOND®. He creates the effect of movementin this way, using a well-known, kinetic effect:the closely spaced, repetition of the slatsmeans the façade is more or less permeable dependingon the viewer’s standpoint. Viewed faceon, the façade appears transparent, as the glassfrontage behind the slats is visible; looking alongthe length of the building, however, changes theviewing angle. The lamellas seem to draw closertogether until the glass façade is completelyconcealed. Every movement creates a new perspectiveand reveals a new view.
