LIGHT AND ORDER

This residential building also makes the most of all the opportunities offered. It opts for the principles of modern architecture with its clear, configuring structure and its pale façade surfaces with joints which accentuate the strict grid pattern. However, both site and location have their limitations. The layout of the plot is long and narrow; and the setting is very unremarkable. What scope can architecture really have in such a middle-of-the-road environment in a middle-sized town? The architects’ objective was not just to devise a modern architectural format but also to deal with the practical concerns of creating more living space, more privacy and more light. The ground floor, with its exposed concrete walls, is largely concealed from view. The garage and ancillary rooms are located here. At the rear, the structure is set about a metre under the level of the garden, and this is where the concrete shell opens up. A rather intimate but well-lit guest room is revealed, which is set far back behind the edge of the upper floor, protected from the sun and prying eyes. On top of this partly subterranean, heavy base, the living floor is an airy, gleaming structure, thanks to its ALUCOBOND® façade. It extends well beyond the base and makes the best possible use of the limited scope offered by the length of the property. As the garden side is small and narrow and does not provide much privacy, the architects moved the outdoor space to the upper floor. The result is a living space which opens out at the rear onto a generous-sized loggia, where seclusion and shelter from the weather are assured. Its glass façade can be opened; it slides to the side so that the winter garden becomes an outdoor seating area in summer. Large-format ALUCOBOND® panels have been used to build an enclosed in-between space. It straddles both the interior and exterior of the building and, in tune with the building structure, it is unequivocally crisp and angular in form. Despite the strict geometry, a large glazed roof ensures a great deal of daylight reflects on the bronze and grey metallic ALUCOBOND® panels as it floods into the space. It alters the space and its perimeters: they are shifted gently by the soft light and shade whereas dazzling daylight diffuses them completely. Indeed, the house and its façade become a showcase for structural order and predictably unpredictable daylight.
