UPWARDLY MOBILE MANCHESTER

The slender, soaring residential tower has turned out just as the architects Denton Corker Marshall intended: it is a modernist utopia. The architects’ residential tower, Trinity Riverview, extends bold and high above the Mancunian rooftops. The name Riverview is a real understatement, because the view offered by the 100-metre tower is far more extensive than just the river meandering past below it. Manchester is upwardly mobile and, thanks to economic structural change, it has become an important location not only for international finance and technology but also for the service and creative industries. The city is undergoing densification, especially at its bustling centre. Anyone finding a plot of land suitable for development alongside the river, will endeavour to make the most of the space. The architects of Trinity Riverview have succeeded in making a landmark statement with their structure which also stands on a narrow plot of land. They have recessed the base at the narrow end of this residential building, added a glass frontage and columns enveloped in ALUCOBOND®. The façade covering the reinforced concrete frame structure is a classic, strict grid format with clearly perceptible floor/ceiling slabs. Full length ALUCOBOND® tray panels and floor-to-ceiling windows form vertical bands, which extend up the long façade, enhancing the height of the building. Raised strips of varying lengths are placed along the vertical seams, emphasizing the upward movement of the tower. The architects combined naturAL Line, Silver Metallic, Grey Metallic and Black ALUCOBOND® with glass and defined the building using only the folds, seams and gloss levels of the façade. Depending on your perspective, the slender oblong or tower seems even taller and appears to merge with the clouds when the sky is a cloudy Manchester grey.
