Bouw grootste bibliotheek van NL begonnen

Wethouder Cultuur, Hannah Belliot heeft vrijdag 24 september de eerste paal geslagen voor de nieuwe Centrale Bibliotheek. Hiermee start de bouw van de grootste bibliotheek van Nederland. De bibliotheek wordt gebouwd op Oosterdokseiland.

De grootste bibliotheek van Nederland krijgt een omvang van 28.000 m2. Naar verwacht zal de bibliotheek in 2007 klaar zijn. Naast de officiële eerste paal ceremonie overhandigde de wethouder het boek: ‘Cultuur in uitvoering, nieuwe en vernieuwde cultuurgebouwen’ aan Felix Rottenberg. Bij de plechtigheid waren tevens Rijksbouwmeester Jo Coenen en architect Ab Vos aanwezig.

The new city library will be the centrepiece of the Oosterdokseiland, a newly developed area in Amsterdam. The building site is bordered in the north by the railway tracks leading to the central station, in the east by a planned conservatory, and in the south by the water of the Oosterdok and the city centre. The new Oba will not only become an integrated part of the surroundings, but also of the cityscape. The main theme of the Amsterdam library is the plinth design as a sophisticated interplay of the lower and upper ground-floor levels. They are connected with the upper floors, which comprise a number of library floors and interior rooms. There is a terrace on the top fl oor accommodating the library theatre and a conference centre. A building has been created which is homely and invites contemplation, stimulates activity and makes visitors feel relaxed, and comfortable. A paradoxical interweaving space that is both enclosed and open at the same time. Inside the entrance, the terraced-shaped library levels are ground around the voids. These levels lead to the children’s library on the lower ground-floor level.
