Lodewijk Baljon ontvangt twee onderscheidingen ASLA

Landschapsarchitecten Lodewijk Baljon ontving afgelopen week twee onderscheidingen van de Amerikaanse organisatie ASLA (The American Society of Landscape Architects). Lodewijk Baljon is er als eerste Nederlandse bureau in geslaagd twee Asla Awards te ontvangen.

In de categorie Design ontvingen ze een Award of Merit voor het ontwerp ‘Rijksmuseum Twente in samenwerking met bureau SmitsRinsma’. De tweede Award viel in de categorie Analysis and Planning waar ze een Award of Honor voor ontvingen met het ontwerp 'Groen door Rood' voor Buiten-Vennep, in samenwerking met Vista landscape and urban design en Faro architecten.

Conceptually, this space is the mediator between the old and the new. The plan had to meet with accessibility requirements due to the raised level of the buildings at the site. Surrounded by a dark building, the courtyard had to become a bright place: a garden that would provide a restful spot in the middle of the museum. The director of the museum did not want a sculpture garden, and although occasionally a statue might find its place there, the visitors' attention is directed to the objects within the museum. On a warm summer day, the Rijksmuseum courtyard and café are popular destinations for museum visitors and locals. In the drab days of winter, the courtyard retreats to become more a visual amenity to be viewed from the café and from the museum ambulatories that surround it.

There is a great demand for green housing in Western Holland, but it is rare and difficult to build. In the region this type of housing is rare and difficult to build. The focus of this project is The Haarlemmermeer Polder, a piece of reclaimed agricultural land near Amsterdam that is under heavy urban pressure and suffers from poor water management. By combining the use of this land with low density housing, the green-and-blue character of the region is reinforced. This is a pilot project in creating an extraordinary environment for housing, while financing and building new functions, and is linked to the planning policies of the province's new regional plan.

The nine-member jury selected 33 projects to receive awards from a field of over 550 entries. “I was especially impressed with the quality of the projects at all scales and at various levels of budgets," said Frederick R. Steiner, ASLA, jury chair and Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. "The best projects displayed great understanding of natural processes, considerable sensitivity to people, and a high level of design acumen. I believe the award recipients exemplify the many contributions that landscape architects are making to improve our built environments.”

The ASLA Awards Program is administered by the ASLA Library and Education Advocacy Fund, a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization established by ASLA in 2001. The ASLA Fund is dedicated to expanding the body of knowledge of the landscape architecture profession, to promoting the value of landscape architecture, and to increasing public understanding of environmental and land use issues and principles.

Founded in 1899, ASLA is the national professional association for landscape architects representing more than 14,200 members. Landscape architecture is a comprehensive discipline of land analysis, planning, design, management, preservation, and rehabilitation. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication, and fellowship.
