RIBA Awards 2004 gepresenteerd

23 juni 2004, 13:54

Norddeutsche Landesbank [ picture 1 ]
Architect: Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner

Playful, even wilful in places, the building offers a fine and highly individual presence to the city, and an inventive new standard of office environment that avoids the monotony of current corporate plush, and suggests more rewarding ways of working in the inner city.

Howth House [ picture 2 ]
Architect: O’Donnell + Tuomey

This is a delightful family house, with excellent aspect and prospect, which makes a distinctive architectural contribution to its neighbourhood without trying to dominate. Clearly the result of a happy collaboration between committed client and sensitive architect.

The Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art [ picture 3 ]
Architects: Zaha Hadid Architects

The journey up through the building exploits the drama of this interlocked matrix of mass and light. This is a visceral experience in a tough building. Here is architecture played like high drama where great mass is suspended in light.

Graduate Centre [ picture 4 ]
Architect: Studio Daniel Libeskind

It is impossible to treat this building dispassionately – as if it were just some odd piece of academic development. It is unashamedly a ‘landmark’ gesture by an aspiring but hitherto modest institution. As such the clients are to be highly congratulated.

Dick Place [ picture 5 ]
Architect: Andrew Doolan

This is the product of a remarkable trust between client and architect. The whole is an experimental fantasy in light and water - a shimmering object of desire. This sadly was the architect’s last work, as he died suddenly in the week the judges made their unanimous recommendation of an award.

Maggie’s Cancer Caring Respite Centre [ picture 6 ]
Architect: Frank Gehry with James F Stephen

This beautifully put together respite centre sits, seemingly isolated, in an elevated position overlooking the Tay Estuary. With its stainless steel clad undulating roof, it is an inspirational piece of architecture in conception and detail.

The Manchester Museum [ picture 7 ]
Architects: Ian Simpson Architects

It was previously very difficult to find your way around the museum and near impossible in a wheelchair, but perhaps the biggest challenge has been to make the museum intellectually accessible.

TFL International Offices [ picture 8 ]
Architects: Studio Baad

This is a remarkable essay in inventive architecture to provide enclosure with economy; a simple direct low-energy, low-cost building with elegance – a true delight.

Bridge of Aspiration [ picture 9 ]
Architect: Wilkinson Eyre Architects

The bridge is a very imaginative design and evokes the spirit of the ballet dancers who use it. It has a wonderful quality of light and very thoughtfully detailed. It is called the Bridge of Aspiration but is total inspiration.

Advance Dental Clinic [ picture 10 ]
Architects: Richard Mitzman Architects

Lying in a dentist's chair looking at the blue sky and clouds, through a carefully placed roof light, must soothe. It is an immensely restful and cheering interior achieved by an understanding of the basis of architecture: light and form.

Ontario College of Art & Design [ picture 11 ]
Architect: Alsop Architects with Rywa

By elevating the new building nine storeys above the ground, land that might have been built on has been saved for shared use and turned from a car park to an external extension of the college’s activities. The resulting project is courageous, bold and just a little insane.

The Butterfly House [ picture 12 ]
Architect: Laurie Chetwood

The architect deserves praise for the way that art and design have been integrated in this building. Innovation and experimentation are the key drivers behind the design vision and this has created a truly unique and different building.
