New Babylon

When the Babylon complex in The Hague was completed in the early 1970s it was at the cutting edge of contemporary metropolitan development. By the turn of the millennium, however, the brown interior and reserved design was well out of sync with a modern urban environment. MVSA was asked to upgrade and expand the complex in 2003, a challenge we accepted with relish.

The heart of our approach was to create new layers of form and function. Useful floor space was increased to 143,000 m² while the building’s footprint only grew from 7,100 to 10,500 m². At 102 and 142 m, the two towers of New Babylon represent a unique landmark in the redevelopment of the city’s Central Station area while also showing what can be accomplished in a very limited space.

Another factor in the success of the New Babylon project is the way living space combines with the central location and excellent transport network to contribute to responsible urban development. We also ensured that all materials were selected for their sustainability, durability and ease of maintenance. Luxurious apartments, commercial premises, an expanded underground car park, a transparent façade and hanging gardens blend together in a building with a fresh edge all of its own.
