This radical transformation of Rotterdam’s Central Station re-anchored it in the city centre and within the wider European transport network. The old building had been out of step with contemporary requirements regarding size, layout and form, and the number of travellers was expected to almost triple between 2013 and 2025.

The upgrade for the station and the surrounding area was designed by Team CS, a cooperation between ourselves, Benthem Crouwel Architects and West 8. On the north side, the station has a transparent hall with no major extensions, complementing the character of the late 19th-century Proveniers district. On the city centre side it showcases a new grandeur in keeping with the imposing adjacent high-rise buildings. With the trams relocated to the side of the station square, and parking moved underground, the public space in front of the station now offers open and direct access to the city.

The new complex is designed as an organic whole and passengers have the sense of entering an integrated space from the moment they arrive. Rectangular skylights in the station provide diffused natural daylight. The platforms are covered by a new transparent roof, including one of the largest solar rooftops in Europe. The fascinating patterns of light transmitted down onto the platforms are a fitting tribute to the magical makeover of this station.
