Ting Residence

Vandaag, 00:00
Built on a unleveled hill in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, the owner of this home wanted to make the most of the challenging terrain and the views it offered. The architects had to deal with an 11-meter difference between the road and the first buildable level, which presented a unique design challenge. The solution was to locate the garage at street level, while the main living areas are reached via a glass lift or concrete stairs.

The exterior is defined by raw concrete walls and frames, but what stands out most is the use of Chengal timber strips, which follow and amplifies the flowing curves of the building. The strips act almost like a wooden shield for the unfinished concrete softening and adding warmth. Chengal is a heavy Malaysian hardwood, valued for its exceptional durability and natural resistance to termites and fungal decay. Its warm yellow-brown tone deepens over time into a rich purple-brown, combining resilience with timeless beauty. These elegant strips shape the continuous curves of the house while contributing to a biophilic design, where the natural timber contrasts with the surrounding greenery to create a harmonious connection between architecture and landscape.

Inside, Meranti timber is used for the doors. Meranti is one of Malaysia’s most well-known species, derived from several Shorea trees. It comes in a variety of types light, dark, red, yellow, and white each with its own color and density. The heartwood can range from pale pink and yellow-brown to deep red-brown, with a straight or slightly interlocked grain.

For the ceilings, the architects chose Yellow Balau, another dense hardwood from the Shorea group, renowned for its strength and durability. The golden-brown tones of Yellow Balau bring both warmth and structure, and in this project are paired with zinc-titanium roofing in an interlocking design that enhances the home’s sweeping curves while ensuring a watertight finish.

The ceiling construction itself uses two overlapping leak-proof roofs with steel spines from which the timber rafters radiate mimicking the delicate pattern of leaf veins. The decking is also made of Chengal, extending the house’s durability and tying the design back to the natural environment.

Adding to this organic approach, the rocks and boulders originally found on site were reused as part of the home’s base, reinforcing the sense that the building grows directly from the landscape and yet again emphasizing the natural atmosphere of the house.
