Located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, the S11 House is a striking transformation of a run down bungalow into a sustainable, award-winning residence. The design carefully preserves the site's natural character by retaining five mature trees including frangipanis, a fruit tree, and a coconut palm and creating the new structure around them.
Conceived as a "tree canopy," the single-residential home integrates a range of eco-features: a 5kW photovoltaic roof installation, rainwater harvesting tanks, and natural ventilation strategies that reduce reliance on mechanical cooling. Materials from the original bungalow were recycled where possible, and natural finishes dominate the interior.
Timber plays a central role in the project and reflects Malaysia's rich forestry heritage. The flooring and upper decks are made from
C
hengal
,
a heavy Malaysian hardwood known for its exceptional durability and resistance to termites and fungal decay. With its warm yellow-brown tone that deepens to a rich purple-brown over time, chengal adds both resilience and natural beauty.
Inside, the house showcases a variety of species, including M
ahogany
and R
osewood
to make indoor furniture, valued for their strength and elegance, alongside locally planted T
eak
. Though not local, teak thrives in Malaysia and has proven to be a reliable and sustainable timber source, offering its classic golden-brown hue and durability. All timber used in the home carries FSC certification, contributing the project's commitment to responsible sourcing.
Beyond timber, the house incorporates other distinct green features: blackwater treatment for garden irrigation, wind turbines and roof extraction fans, daylight tubes, and an insulated roof. With this holistic approach, the S11 House achieved Malaysia's highest Green Building Index (GBI) Platinum rating, standing as a showcase for how Malaysian timber can support innovative, sustainable architecture.
