Set in Malé Atoll, Coco Palm Bodu Hithi is a five-star resort that balances structural clarity, material warmth, and natural construction. Though only a 40-minute speedboat ride from Malé, the island feels secluded and defined by turquoise water and architecture that seems to float above it all.

The resort has around 100 villas, some grounded on the island, others rising above the lagoon on timber stilts, extending up to 200 metres offshore in an oval formation. Linking these villas is a Balau boardwalk system, a subtle yet elevating feature that guides guests across various reflections of water and sky while harmoniously connecting the resort’s public and private spaces.

While the resort’s beauty is easily visible, its quiet strength lies in Malaysian tropical hardwoods Merbau, Kempas, and Balau selected for their density, durability, and natural resilience in humid, saline climates. Known for their strength and rich tone, Balau, Kempas, and Merbau are among Malaysia’s most valued tropical hardwoods. Each species combines natural beauty with durability performing exceptionally well in humid, coastal environments where resilience is key. The reception’s post-and-beam roof showcases Merbau and Kempas, while the main restaurant features minimalist Balau cladding that allows light and views to take over. Beyond these, Balau continues as decking in the spa and boardwalks, its deep brown tone enhanced by night lighting that creates a calm, inviting atmosphere that exudes tranquility.

The resort’s design embraces simplicity over excess. Interiors remain neutral and tactile, drawing focus to the sea and horizon through wide glazing and open transitions. Private terraces, outdoor bathrooms, and plunge pools create a seamless connection between interior and exterior, expressing luxury through simplicity and spatial harmony.

From a technical standpoint, timber serves both structural and expressive roles: forming roofs, cladding, flooring, and joinery across restaurants, and villa’s. The use of tropical hardwoods not only ensures performance in a tropical environment but reduces the need for frequent maintenance highlighting sustainability through longevity.

Coco Collection’s “Coco Cares” program reinforces this by integrating environmental awareness across its operations, from coral restoration to responsible material use. The project also reflects a broader architectural lineage in the Maldives, where resorts reinterpret local vernacular traditions such as roofs, raised pavilions, natural ventilation through contemporary construction techniques.

For architects, Coco Palm Bodu Hithi offers lessons in material honesty, climatic adaptation, and experiential circulation. Here, timber is not a surface treatment but the architectural language itself one that unites structure, texture, and atmosphere in harmony with nature.
