OPTICAL ILLUSIONS

If the refraction of light on objects is the onlything which makes them visible and real, then istheir reflection an identical or a similar reality?Where does the repetition originate? This is thephilosophical question presented by the façadeat Latécoère's new headquarters in Toulouse.Architects Brénac et Gonzalez capitalize on multiple,refractive perspectives of the new building’ssurroundings to create a fantastic collageof reality in which the actual origin of the mirroredimages is of little significance. The sole determiningfactor is our individual viewpoint. Thearchitects clad the façade in numerous identicalglass elements intermixed with ALUCOBOND®PLUS tray panels in naturAL Reflect, clear mirrorsurface and anodized look C0/EV1, matt light-reflective.These surfaces reflect their surroundingsdifferently: sometimes revealing clear contours,sometimes only suggesting colours. Thetwo different decors are connected to createan angular three dimensional geometry on thefaçade and they reflect parts of the sky, buildings,trees and people in different, recurring, refractedimages. The vertical pleated bands onthe façade and the building’s angularity multiplythese images, which mutate into a seemingly infinite repetition. As if this were not confusingenough, the architects insert two-storey loggiasinto the volume, interrupting the façade’s gridof mirrored folds. The façade, still featuring thesame ALUCOBOND® tray panels and glass, tapersdiagonally inwards at this point to generateyet another perspective. The sight lines becomesurreally elongated by the reflections, implyingspatial depth but dissolving into thin air behindthe acute-angled edges of the buildings. A partof what is visible is a mere illusion, an imaginarycontinuation of the space dissected and removedfrom the building volume. Close scrutinyis needed to reveal the real boundaries and theactual format of the whole large building concealedbehind the reflections and angular folding.In this respect, this façade is perfectly intune with the building's use. After all, Latécoèredevelops technology for aerospace, bringing researchersa little closer to the boundaries of terrestrialspace and the unimaginable things thatmight lie beyond the range of our sun.
