When outside the wind is whistling, ice and snow are piling up and the hours of darkness stretch out endlessly, Scandinavians show a stroke of genius by creating interiors which are so cosy that long, cold nights cannot make you feel dejected or gloomy. In this respect, the Grow Hotel in Solna near Stockholm is really Nordic, and that is particularly noticeable at night and in the winter time. Its folded, silver ALUCOBOND® façade defies the forces of nature like an iceberg. The architects took their inspiration for the building exterior from metal façades on neighbouring industrial buildings. In the interior, copper tones and the brown-grey hues of surfaces, furniture and accessories create a fiery, earthy atmosphere. This radiates warmth for travellers coming in from the cold in the same way caves warmed people in the ice age. The building’s external form and its floor plan constitute a welcoming gesture as its two wings open outwards, and the glass-fronted ground floor allows warm copper hues to flow out into the street. This is a real bonus for the streetscape because the hotel is located in the south of Solna, in an industrial area between roads and railway lines. The hotel plays a strategic role in district development and in encouraging a livelier ambience in the evening or at night. The rooms offer guests restful Nordic-style achromatic design. The palette, however, is not restricted to black and white; it features many intermediate tones from sand to greige to anthracite. These tones turn the simple, reduced design into something pleasing, cosy and subtle; they create order and ensure there is no sense of sterility. The hotel’s high-level design means its impact reaches far into the district – a lighthouse project on the so-called Solna beach.
