ICONIC WORKPLACE FOR A SAFE SKY

Imagine a 60-m² glass-enclosed space housing 13 workstations equipped with highly sensitive instrumentation approximately 20 stories in the air. Now imagine the task for the 13 people manning those work stations. About 1,155 times a day, commercial airliners – each carrying an average of 107 passengers – take off and land on the runways here. Beginning around 2000, the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) warned that SFO’s control tower would not withstand another major earthquake. Walter P Moore teamed up with Fentress Architects and Hensel Phelps Builders to create a new tower on a design-build basis. The new tower, sandwiched between Terminals 1 and 2, would replace the one fi rst built in the 1960s and remodelled in the 1980s – the one knocked out of commission during the earthquake in 1989. Two factors primarily drove the engineering: first, seismic performance, second, unobstructed views for the air traffic controllers, to guarantee safety during operation. The engineering, in turn, drove the architecture. The result is an iconic, torch-like 21st-century tower, engineered to remain operational in extreme weather and seismic situations.
The new air traffic control tower is the tallest vertical selfcentring post tension concrete structure in the United States. ALUCOBOND® in the custom SFO Silver colour clads this spiralling torch-shaped structure. The west face of the airport control tower is “opened” vertically with a backlit glass façade that stretches into the air to create a local visual landmark. Paul Kim, AIA, NCARB, project manager, HNTB explains: “The intent was to provide a tectonic and elegantly detailed façade with a subtle but dynamic skin with spiralling aluminium panel joints around the conical surface. We also saw an opportunity with the tower’s location. Unlike towers at most airports, the SFO tower is located immediately adjacent to drivers and pedestrians. We wanted people to experience the tower up close as well as from afar. The tower was designed as an iconic symbol for the airport.”
